May Maker Month: A 30-Day Creative Challenge to Reset Your Practice
30 days. 15 minutes a day. One month to encourage your creative practice without unnecessary pressure.
There has been an idea circulating that hasn’t gone away. (This is a good “pay attention flag” for me.) It is not an idea that I would naturally gravitate toward, but something about it wasn’t letting go. Finally, this week I decided to jump in and give it a try.
So here I am, inviting you to join me.
Here is the challenge:
Choose one kind of art on which to concentrate.
Choose 3 colors.
Choose one motif to incorporate in your work.
Commit to 30 days of creating.
Spend 15 minutes a day making.
We can share our progress on the chat. And we can cheer each other on as we make our projects.
Here Are My Choices:
Surprisingly, I am choosing black, white, and gold for my colors. I have never done a series with these colors, so I am intrigued to see what happens.
I am going to create abstract collages.
And plants are going to be a motif that binds it all together.
I started digging in my paper stash to inspire. Here are some of the pieces I found. Choosing the papers to see what might go together is one of my favorite activities.
There are obviously not enough substates here for a 30-day project, but this is enough to get me started.
Mark making is truly a joy. Slowing down to just make simple marks on paper is therapeutic. I will be making more and more of these over the next several days. I will branch out and use various kinds of paper in lots of sizes to utilize.
If you would like some mark-making videos, just let me know. I would love to share ideas.
I will be more likely to stick with the project if I am well-prepared. So I will be sharing prep ideas as I am getting ready for May.
I am so excited to start! I would love the camaraderie of making with new friends. There is no pressure to be a master maker. If you love to create and want to enjoy it with new friends, just leave me a comment and let me know.
What Has Inspired Me This Week
Helen Wells Art videos on YouTube are so encouraging. She always teaches that healthy creators embrace the joy in the journey and keep making space to play within their making.
What I Have Been Reading
The Impressionist Revolution from Monet to Matisse is a book I picked up while visiting that exhibit on loan to the Frist from Dallas. The exhibit was phenomenal, and the book is fantastic as well.
I am an Amazon affiliate partner, and purchases you make through my link help support my art.
I could put that visit down for what has inspired me because I walked in and started crying when I saw Renoir’s “Roses and Peonies in a Vase.”
If you are in Nashville, be sure to head to the Frist and enjoy the amazing exhibit.

❤️ it!
Helen Wells is a joy!
